Career and Previous Elected Experience:
Andy Harris was first elected to the Maryland Senate in 1998, representing the 9th District, where he served for 12 years. In 2008, Harris began his campaign for the House of Representatives. Seeking to represent Marylands first congressional district, Harris lost in the general election to Frank Kratovil Running again in 2010, Harris beat Kratovil, and has been continously reelected to date.
Education and Career:
Harris studied medicine at Johns Hopkins University, and graduated with an MD in 1980. Harris continued his work at the institution as an anesthesiologist and associate professor. Eventually, Harris carried his work into the military as a medical specialist. Harris and his team established the John Hopkins Medical Naval Reserve Unit, and assisted in the caring of active veterns and military duties. While working in Washington, Harris also continued practicing medicine, citing his belief in maintaing his full time job besides working as a legislator.

Based on several rankings, including the Lugar Center, Harris does not typically cross party lines. Harris tends to vote with the Republican Party on the majority of the Bills that he sees. The Lugar Center ranked Harris 274th on bipartisanship in the House of Representatives.
Personal Life:
Harris’s parents came to the U.S. during World War II from Eastern Europe. His father was also a practicing anesthesiologist.Harris was married to his first wife Sylvia for 33 years before her death in 2014. Together they had five children. Harris remarried in 2017.
